AFRICA AND COVID-19 VIRTUAL CARTOON FESTIVAL COMPETITION

The African virtual cartoon festival on Covid-19 has been organized by the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Iran in Kenya in collaboration with University of Nairobi, and East African Cartoonists' Society on the title "Africa and Covid-19 Pandemic" with 13 sub titles to choose from as highlighted on its call which you can access here.

LIBRARY VIRTUAL OPEN AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY WEEK

The University Library has planned for a VIRTUAL open week from 23rd to 25th June 2020. This event is strictly for Staff and Students of the University of Nairobi. The theme of the Open Week is “University of Nairobi Library Designing Equitable Foundations for Open Knowledge”.

SKILLS TO SUCCEED IN A POST COVID-19 WORLD

Job-specific skills assessments continue to be one of the most common forms of assessments with more than 59% of organisations deploying them for recruitment. However, skills assessments need to continually evolve as the skills they assess change. Equally, the range of skills being assessed continue to shift in response to market requirements, ultimately providing insight into candidates’ strengths and weaknesses in relation to job requirements.

CHINESE AMBASSADOR SCHOLARSHIP 2020/2021

The Chinese Ambassador's scholarship programme was started in 2013, with the aim of supporting needy students. The Chinese Embassy has been supporting the education institutions in Kenya in a bid to help young Kenyans to pursue their dreams at the University of Nairobi.

Over 100 Students from the University of Nairobi have benefited from this programme since 2013. The Scholarship targets only undergraduate students under the Government Sponsored (Module 1) Category.

PROF. KIAMA APPOINTED CHAIR OF THE ASSOCIATION OF COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITIES EAST AND SOUTHERN AFRICA REGIONAL COMMITTEE

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is an international organization dedicated to building a better world through higher education located in London, United Kingdom that has more than 500 members spread across the 50 countries in the commonwealth with University of Nairobi being one of them.

UoN GRADUATE THESIS TO INFLUENCE ANTI-CORRUPTION POLICY

Eric a former UoN student having graduated in December 2019, wrote a thesis under the provision of Prof.Ben Sihanya titled "Viability of Lifestyle Audits as an Anti-Corruption Strategy in Kenya: A Critical Assessment of the Policy, Legal and Administrative Framework." It has been lauded by the Senate as timely and significant study, no wonder the panel scored the research work at an A grade. Dr. Nancy Baraza chaired the panel with Dr. Jackson Bett as the reader. MEASURES TAKEN FOR SCHOOL RE-OPENING

Schools might be reopening in two and half months time (September) and according to CS Prof Magoha, he felt confident that the preparations in place to check the spread of Covid-19 among learners were sufficient. The Education Ministry still has ongoing consultation on the academic calendar year more so on the school exams. Prof Magoha requested that board of management should support governmental efforts to create a safe,conducive environment for the students upon school resumption. These efforts include:

NORMAL OPERATIONS RESUMPTION FOR COMMUTER TRAINS

In his national address, President Kenyatta, on the 6th June 2020 revised the government nationwide dusk to dawn curfew from 7pm-5am to 9pm-4am. Kenya Railways tweeted  "Kenya Railways wishes to inform our customers that effective Monday 15th June 2020, all commuter trains will revert to the normal schedule ; following the revision of the daily national curfew hours from 7:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

$100 MILLION YOUTUBE FUND IN SUPPORT OF BLACK CONTENT CREATORS

These Covid-19 pandemic times has seen an interesting turn of everyone turning to social media for their businesses or starting channels on cooking, make up, fashion, memes, challenges the list is endless. The popular platforms are TikTok, Instagram. YouTube is not being left behind, in light of George Floyd's death, they are launching a $100 million fund to amplify the voices of black creators on its platform by developing talent and funding new shows. The fund will support the creation of new YouTube original programming and help with the development of black creators and artists.

KENYA'S 2.91 TRILLION BUDGET FOR FINANCIAL YEAR 2020/2021

Treasury CS Ukur Yattani, unveils the 2020/2021 2.91trillion budget yesterday 11th June 2020 to the National Assembly for approval. The final spending estimates are slightly lower than the present Ksh 3 trillion budget approved in December's first supplementary budget.The theme was on "Stimulating the Economy to safeguard livelihood, streamline jobs and Steer Economic Recovery."
