KENYA'S 2.91 TRILLION BUDGET FOR FINANCIAL YEAR 2020/2021

Treasury CS Ukur Yattani, unveils the 2020/2021 2.91trillion budget yesterday 11th June 2020 to the National Assembly for approval. The final spending estimates are slightly lower than the present Ksh 3 trillion budget approved in December's first supplementary budget.The theme was on "Stimulating the Economy to safeguard livelihood, streamline jobs and Steer Economic Recovery." This article will touch on the budget for Education, Youth, Persons with Disabilities and the highlights of the budget.

VALUE ADDED TAX - DIGITAL MARKET PLACE SUPPLY - TO TAX YOU FOR YOUR MOBILE APPS ET AL

KRA - The Kenya Revenue Authority plans to tax every Kenyan downloading e-books, movies and mobile apps. In the Value added tax on the Digital market place supply, the regulations proposes the taxation on news, magazines, journals, TV shows streaming, music, podcasts, online gaming, software, drivers,website filters, and firewalls. Other targeted services include website hosting, online data warehousing, file-sharing, and cloud storage services.

UBER AFRICA LAUNCHES DIGITAL WALLET

Uber is launching its Uber cash digital wallet feature in sub-saharan Africa through a partnership with San Francisco based Nigeria founded fintech firm Flutterwave. There are different top-up methods available, Kenyans will use Mpesa. Alon Lits, Uber's general manager for sub saharan Africa says that Uber cash will go live this week with the aim to increase Uber's ride traffic in Africa by boosting the volume of funds sent to digital wallets and reducing friction in the payment process.

GRADUAL RE-OPENING OF THE ECONOMY, AGREEMENT TERMS FROM BOTH NATIONAL AND COUNTY GOVERNMENTS

In his national address on the 6th June 2020, President Uhuru spoke about the lack of sufficient isolation-ward capacity at the county level giving an example of Siaya County that had a 10 bed isolation ward with 9 positive covid-19 cases. The home care alternative would be a risk as it exposed loved ones to the virus. Kenya currently has 3,094 positive cases with the number increasing daily.

PhD STUDENTSHIP FOR RESEARCHERS WITH DISABILITIES

PENDA is pleased to launch it's final PhD studentship for researchers with disabilities in Kenya focusing on researching the impact of Covid on people with disabilities, surrounding Disability Inclusive Development. The PENDA Consortium is committed to building the capacity of researchers with disabilities from LMICs, and so is funding exciting new studentships in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.

MR. JOHNSON KINYUA APPOINTED AS THE NEW DEAN OF STUDENTS

Johnson Kinyua has been appointed as the New Dean of Students with effect from June 2, 2020. Previously, he served as the Director, Career Services, UoN in charge of students’ skills development, job placement, linking students with industry, academic advisory services, career fairs, counseling services, high school recruitments, students exchange, apprenticeship services, alumni networking and mentorship services for a period of 2 years.

The ICT Authority invites suitable recent university graduates to apply for the Presidential Digital Talent & Programme (POTP) Cohort V intake. Through this transformative initiative the Government is looking for young talented Kenyans with passion for ICT and public service to undergo a structured 12-month internship program in both the public and private sector organizations.

FULL SCHOLARSHIP FOR PWDs TO STUDY A MASTER'S DEGREE AT UON

Development Pathways is excited to announce the launch of the Krystle Kabare Scholarship. One Kenyans student with disability will be awarded full academic funding to study a Master's degree at the University of Nairobi. The scholarship was set up to honour the memory of the late Krystle Kabare.

GOOGLE MAPS AND THEIR FEATURE ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

As some countries begin to open up, returning to work, Google is rolling out Transit alerts to Maps to help people avoid crowds. The feature displays when public transportation is likely to be more or less busy. There is an additional alert for drivers to see updates on their route. Google helps passengers avoid busy times, and keep up social distancing amid the pandemic. To get started one just searches for a station in Google Maps to see the departure board and busyness data, where available. Unfortunately, this feature is not here in the 254.

UoN RANKED IN THE 6.8% IN THE WORLD

According to the World University Rankings 2020-2021, UoN has been ranked 6.8% globally out of twenty thousand universities. This year, University of Nairobi ranks as follows: Quality of Education, Alumni Employment and Quality of faculty have an Overall Score of 68.4 with a a research performance rank of 1294 , with a world rank of 1357,and leading in Kenya.
