President Uhuru Kenyatta in his national address on Monday 26th July 2020, pronounced that Universities and Colleges institutions will reopen in January 2021 thus revoking an earlier announcement that higher learning institutions will reopen in September 2020. The Ministry of Education in response to this has released a press statement on 30th Thursday July 2020 after a meeting with its key stakeholders. Factors influencing their decision include the increasing number of new positive cases, some affecting universities and colleges such as the University of Nairobi who has unfortunately lost 4 members of staff to Covid-19.
The press statement says that Universities need to continue offering virtual learning, examinations and graduations but in strict adherence to observing quality measures as set up by the Commission for University Education. UoN is planning to hold its virtual graduation on the 25th September 2020.
UoN has adapted to the new normal taking up online learning and even being the first to administer final exams online with great success and model for other universities to borrow great lessons and key insights.Until the safety of the learners is guaranteed, higher learning institutions must learn fast on how to onboard their learners using the digital tools/platforms available.
