UoN Students Scale the heights of Mt. Kenya for the health and well-being of the Youth

Nairobi, Kenya, 28 May 2022 — Nine Kenyan students, four ladies and five gentlemen, are preparing for a new challenge: to scale the heights of Mount Kenya . To prepare for this challenge, they are climbing today the stratovolcano Mount Longonot. This initiative is part of the Our Rights, Our Lives, Our, Our Future (O3 Plus) Programme that was launched at University of Nairobi and at Mount Kenya University by UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa.

5 UoN students won the Equity Hackathon Competition

5 UoN students participated in a month long Equity Hackathon competition and were crowned winners. Maluki Muthusi and Franklin Bosire were first runners up, Herbet Kimani, 2nd runners up and in position 4, Janet Mugambi and Jude Thaddeus. These students are all 4th year, Bachelor of Science, Computer Science students mentored by Dr. Elisha Abade, a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and Informatics.

Changing the Food Security Narrative in Kenya through the AICAT Program

The Office of the Dean of Students and Career Services on Monday May 23 2022 held an orientation session followed by interviews for 94 shortlisted Faculty of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and Biosystems Engineering Students out of 174 received expressions of interest. The orientation session was held at MLT 401 at the UoN Towers, 4th Floor and was attended by University of Nairobi and Kenya Water Institute students shortlisted for the AICAT Program.

A Brown-lettered Day-UoN 2022 Job Fair

The Office of the Dean of Students and Career Services on Thursday and Friday May 19 and 20, 2022 organized a Job Fair for University of Nairobi Students. The fresh morning was coated with optimism, brown envelopes being waved back and forth as employers and prospective employees gather outside Taifa Hall, Main Campus to kick off the University of Nairobi Students Job Fair 2022.

Benchmarking Visit to Tangaza University on Disability Inclusion

The Tangaza University College hosted a Team from the University of Nairobi on  April 4, 2022 to share knowledge and learn the best practices in disability inclusion. The University of Nairobi Team comprised of the Disability Liaison Office and Central Disability Mainstreaming Committee Members who were joined by the Disability Inclusion Officer, representatives of Student Leaders, Students with Disabilities and the Coordinator for Professional Development all from Tangaza University College.

Benchmarking Visit to KISE on Disability Inclusion

The University of Nairobi Disability Liaison Office and the Disability Mainstreaming Committee conducted a benchmarking visit to the Kenya Institute of Special Education on March 24, 2022. The purpose of the visit was to draw lessons on best practices on disability inclusion to be embraced by the University as they work towards establishment of the University of Nairobi Disability Support Center.

Courtesy Call To The National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK)

As part of the initiative to enhance Disability Inclusion, the University of Nairobi Paid a courtesy call visit on March 3, 2022 to the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya to devise ways of mutual collaboration to advance disability inclusion.  The University of Nairobi was represented by Mr. Johnson Kinyua, the Dean of Students and Ms. Mildred Omino, the Disability Liaison Officer. The National Fund for the Disabled was represented by CPA Anthony Muli and Ms. Sharon, the Programs Manager.

UoN Hosts 4th International Wheelchair Day Celebrations

Globally, the International Wheelchair Day is marked on 1st March annually, the day was first launched in 2008 by Steve Wilkinson who is a wheelchair user. The day is commemorated to celebrate the positive impact of a wheelchair in the lives of the users, celebrate people who make the World a better and more accessible place for people with mobility disabilities and acknowledge and react constructively to people who need a wheelchair, but are unable to acquire one.

Students Sensitized on Disability Inclusion in Students Leadership and Governance

The Disability Liaison Office and the Central Administration Disability Mainstreaming Committee conducted a Seminar to build capacity of Students with disabilities on disability Inclusion in Students Leadership and Governance on February 10, 2022. The training brought together a total of 57 students with disabilities drawn from all the ten Faculties and Kisumu Campus.

Collaboration with Kenya Re to advance Disability Inclusion

February 4, 2022 to learn more about the work done by the corporation to advance disability inclusion through the “Niko Fiti” campaign. The University of Nairobi was represented by Mr. Johnson Kinyua, the Dean of Students and Ms. Mildred Omino, the Disability Liaison Officer. Kenya Re was represented by Ms. Sylvia Karimi, the Corporate Affairs Manager and Mr. Andrew Ongicha, the Communication Officer.
