CS MAGOHA RULES OUT SCHOOL REOPENING UNDER THE CURRENT COVID-19 SITUATION

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has clarified that schools will not reopen in June given the current COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Prof Magoha on Sunday said the final decision on the matter will be made by the National Emergency Response Committee.

“We have said that children should enjoy their holidays and that schools shall remain closed effective 4th of this month (May) up to 4th of next month (June).”

KENYA SEEKS SUSPENSION OF DEBT PAYMENTS IN WAKE OF COVID-19

Kenya is seeking debt-relief options with lenders as the state seeks more money to deal with the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Treasury Principal Secretary, Julius Muia, talks are under way with creditors, both bilateral and multilateral, who may opt to delay payments due this year.

KRA'S RESTORED POWER TO SNOOP ON MPESA AND BANK ACCOUNTS

The Court of Appeal has restored KRA’s power to snoop on tax evaders’ MPESA and bank accounts. In a ruling, the court argues that hindering KRA from accessing the information may cripple the agency’s mandate to collect taxes.

Furthermore, the court felt that KRA would suffer irreversible loss of huge sums of money. The reinstated section of the law will compel third-party firms such as telcos, banks, and schools to share information on persons and firms suspected to be evading taxes.

MALARIA "COMPLETELY STOPPED" BY MICROBE

Scientists have discovered a microbe that completely protects mosquitoes from being infected with malaria.

The team in Kenya and the UK say the finding has "enormous potential" to control the disease.

Malaria is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, so protecting them could in turn protect people.

The researchers are now investigating whether they can release infected mosquitoes into the wild, or use spores to suppress the disease.
