The Department of Kiswahili invites you to an international UON@50 webinar whose theme is Kiswahili Ulimwenguni (Kiswahili in the Globe) on December 2, 2020 from 2.00 pm.

IIn its 50 years of its existence, the University of Nairobi has been instrumental in enhancing the growth of Kiswahli and taking it to the world. In the early 70s, Kiswahili scholars, Prof. Mohamed Andulaziz specifically, took Kiswahili to European countries like Germany. Many other scholars like Prof. Wamitila and Prof. Kineene followed later. Prof. Said Ahmed and Prof. Kineene took Kiswahili to Japan. Dr. Mwaliwa spread it to South Africa while Prof Olali and Dr. Mukhwana before him saw to it that the Chinese learnt Kiswahili. In the 1980s, Prof. Kineene was in South Korea and years later Prof. Tom Olali and Prof. Kithaka wa Mbera as well as Dr. Michira were to follow in his footsteps. Both Prof. Lisanza Muaka and Prof. Iribe Mwangi have spread Kiswahili to Latina America and North America. Dr. Jerono took it to Central America and West Africa. Prof. Mbatiah and Prof. Mberia as well as Dr. Michira, Dr. Mungania and Dr. Zaja have taken it to the US.

These few examples underscore the theme of the Webinar organized by the Department of Kiswahili whose theme is “Kiswahili in the Globe.” From its humble roots in East Africa, Kiswahili is now a global language and the University of Nairobi has played a major role in this globalization of Kiswahili.

The linkage between the University and the alumni is critical in forging strong partnership and collaboration for quality capacity development. There has been a weak linkage between the learning institution and their alumni, which has impacted on efforts to strengthen partnership and development of initiatives that address the current needs. Most alumni are working out there in the industry and there are a lot of lessons, new developments in the job market that needs to inform the present training process of future workforce and scientists.

Therefore, as the UoN celebrates 50 years, the Faculty of Agriculture looks forward to bringing the alumni and the present students together and share on the need to strengthen the alumni networks. This will provide opportunities for alumni participation in training, curriculum review and also strategic development initiative for the faculty.

The Institute of Anthropology, Gender & African Studies (IAGAS) invites you to an international UON@50 webinar on - Gender and Intersectionality Perspectives for Development in the 21st Century.

The Institute of Anthropology, Gender & African Studies (formerly Institute of African Studies) is among the pioneer Institutes in Kenya when it comes to Gender Studies. It has been a journey worth travelling.

Gender and Intersectionality is an emergent approach or rather a new way of looking at gender issues. The attainment of SDGs partly depends on addressing gender and intersectionality perspectives in development programming. Gender is a cross-sectional issue that cuts across all development undertakings and it is at the heart of equality and equity. But again within the gender debate and analysis, we must be alive to the intersections that pervade the gender relations.

This webinar brings together seasoned and accomplished academics and practitioners to address some of these issues so that we can begin to unpack the gender and intersectionality perspectives for development in the 21st Century.

Date: November 25, 2020

Time: 2:00 PM EAT
