A survey by the Kenya Bureau of Statistics reveals that 13.4% of Kenyans are out of work due to temporary layoffs or work reductions. The layoffs are one of the many adverse effects of the pandemic as Kenyans suffer through higher costs of commute and lack of finances, with 30.5% of households unable to pay their rent on time. The survey further reveals that 43% of the participants were outside the labour force for the past seven days.

Oxfam International is withdrawing from 18 countries and laying off almost a third of its program staff amid financial pressures brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. More cost cutting is expected, as Oxfam — one of the world’s best-known development charities — conducts an organizational restructuring.

Panic has gripped staff at the Kakamega County government after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued summons to 17 officials accused of engaging in misappropriation of funds and abuse of office. Those lined up for investigation include three county executive members and 14 other officials serving as accountants and administration.
