The yellow brick road leads to the Jumuia Conference Center Limuru, where the Office of the Dean of Students hosted a Talents Development Training Program from March 24 to March 26, 2022. The mighty band of 50 students selected from the winners of the UoN Talents Day held on December 9, 2021, marched down to Oz, where they would learn the nitty-grittys to harness, nurture and flourish with their gifts.
The workshop mainly focused on identifying, developing, growing, and monetization of talent. The event saw not one or two but six wizards of their craft in attendance to offer reprieve with the necessary skills, each representing a different field, the diversity quite notable in the appearances made. Mr. Lamech Angila, Dean of students KCA, presenting ‘Discovering and Nurturing Talents in the 21st century. Renowned gospel artist, songwriter, and composer Mercy Masika took the young students through: ‘Self Actualization in Talent Identification, Development, Nurturing, and Commercialization.’
Other notable attendees were Dr. Janet Chumba, a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, speaking on "Talent Development Strategies, Application and Effective utilization of Skills and talents post-academic." Mr. Johnson Kinyua, Dean of Students, UoN and Naomi Nyaboga shedding light on ‘The Role of Dean of Students in Nurturing and Promoting Students Talents.’ Lucy Gikundi, Deputy Dean of Students, UoN, speaking on 'The Role of Counseling in dealing with Issues affecting Talented artists and handling the fame that comes with success.
Finally Chris Wekulo, Head of skills Talent, UoN discussing ‘The Choices that Maximize one’s Talent. A round of applause to all involved stakeholders that made the forum a success. It is safe to say that the long journey to Oz was a success as all the students left with the necessary skill set to propagate them in the professional field. Kansas is just but a mere heel click away.
