Staff from the Office of the Dean of Students and Career Services and University Health Services (UHS) comprising of Student Counsellors and Assistant Deans of Students attended a capacity building training on Value Clarification from August 22-24, 2023 at UoN Towers, 10th Floor.
The training that was conducted by the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) facilitators in partnership with the Kenya AIDs Vaccine Initiative (KAVI) aimed focused on values, stigma, stereotypes, beliefs, attitudes and culture as a whole in relation to Sexual Reproductive Health matters.
Values are influenced by our religion, education and culture and influence the actions and decisions taken by an individual on Sexual and Reproductive Health matters. These include Safe Sex, pregnancy, abortion, use of contraceptives, etc.
The training further looked at the Sexual Offenses and Abortion Acts looking at the legal provisions the government has put in place to regulate abortion and the consequences for rape.
Winnie Opondo, the Program Administrative Officer at APHRC and Mori Ogambi, Advisor, Community Access at IPAS coordinated this untimely capacity building training aimed at improving access to sexual and reproductive health and rights services and ensure inclusion for sexual and gender minorities.
The University of Nairobi is grateful to have partnered with APHRC and IPAs to build capacity of staff who handle students Sexual Reproductive Health matters. This is in line with the objectives of the UNESCO funded O3 Plus Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3 Plus) project whose overall goal is to ensure that young people in higher and tertiary education institutions in the Eastern and Southern Africa realize positive health, education and gender equality outcomes through sustained reductions in new HIV infections, unintended pregnancy and gender based violence.
