The University of Nairobi’s Office of Career Services in partnership with the Disability Liaison Office, hosted a Career Fair for high school students with Disabilities on October 18, 2022.  The Career Fair was attended by 145 students from Thika High School for the Blind, Treeside Secondary School, Rev. Muhoro High School and Machakos High School for the Deaf.

The Career Fair was aimed at informing the students of the various opportunities that they could benefit from despite their different challenges. The students were challenged by a number of speakers who repeated the same messages with an aim of inspiring ambition and drive. Some of the notable speakers in attendance were Mr.Johnson Kinyua, Dean of Students, who highlighted the myriads of opportunities present at the University of Nairobi for differently abled students, The Dean of students also spoke of the various policies and facilities by the University to accommodate both staff and students with disabilities.

Mr. David Muthengi, Senior Curriculum Developer KICD, delivered a powerful key note address inspiring the students to learn to stand out not only in their academics but also in life through merit.

The students were also taken through a career session where, Karen Munyao, Section Head Student Organizations, informed them on the various admission requirements that would help them gain entry into the University of Nairobi. This would inform their subject selection and motivate them to work harder and gain entry into the university. The students were also introduced to Mildred Omimo, Section Head Disability Liaison Office, who upon admission would facilitate the smooth entry of students with disabilities entry into the University.

The fair was concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Lucy Gikundi, Deputy Dean of Students, who appreciated the students and the speakers for their attendance. The students left the session gleeful, informed and determined to not let their inability be bar them from their goals. The greatest carry home for them summarized by Stevie Wonders greatest quote,

Just because a man lacks the use of his eyes doesn’t mean he lacks vision.”
