February 4, 2022 to learn more about the work done by the corporation to advance disability inclusion through the “Niko Fiti” campaign. The University of Nairobi was represented by Mr. Johnson Kinyua, the Dean of Students and Ms. Mildred Omino, the Disability Liaison Officer. Kenya Re was represented by Ms. Sylvia Karimi, the Corporate Affairs Manager and Mr. Andrew Ongicha, the Communication Officer.
Great insights was shared by Kenya Re on how their “Niko Fiti” Campaign, a corporate social responsibility initiative had impacted lives of many persons with disabilities through enhancing their Economic Justice and Mobility Independence. The University of Nairobi on the other hand shared the milestones realized on disability inclusion among the University Community including the existing data of students with disabilities across the different Faculties, the UoN Disability Policy, the establishment of the Disability Liaison Office and the ongoing plans to establish the UoN Disability Support Center.
The two institutions agreed to collaborate to advance disability inclusion by exploring different approaches, including but not limited to engaging students with disabilities in internship programs, building the capacity of students with disabilities on soft skills and employability skills and exploring mechanisms of providing assistive devices and assistive learning technologies. The Institutions will explore possibilities of implementing joint projects on disability inclusion that are scalable over time.
