The University of Nairobi Disability Liaison Office and the Disability Mainstreaming Committee conducted a benchmarking visit to the Kenya Institute of Special Education on March 24, 2022. The purpose of the visit was to draw lessons on best practices on disability inclusion to be embraced by the University as they work towards establishment of the University of Nairobi Disability Support Center.
The Team had an opportunity to view the Facilities at the Institute including the Assessment Blocks namely; Physical, Visual, Hearing, Intellectual and Therapy, Learning Facilities and Accommodation Facilities. In depth discussions were conducted to have a better understanding of the Institutional Framework, the assistive devices & resources, student’s campus life, Academic Tutors, Financial Aid, staff with disability and any other challenges.
Kenya Institute of Education invited the University to identify potential areas of collaboration such as disability research, use of therapy and assessment Facilities, training on sign language interpretation and rehabilitation for mutual benefit.
