On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, thirty students from the University of Nairobi were honored with the prestigious Chinese Ambassador Scholarships during a vibrant award ceremony held at the university’s Taifa Hall. The scholarships, awarded annually by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kenya, aim to recognize academic excellence, foster educational cooperation, and strengthen the long-standing friendship between China and Kenya. The students were presented with certificates by the Chinese Ambassador, Guo Haiyan in the presence of the University of Nairobi’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Margaret. J. Hutchinson
The recipients, drawn from various faculties and disciplines, were selected based on their level of neediness. The scholarships are part of China's broader commitment to supporting education in Kenya and promoting cross-cultural exchange between the two nations.
Speaking during the event, H.E, Guo Haiyan, the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, congratulated the awardees and emphasized the importance of education in building bridges between nations. “China remains a strong partner to Kenya in the pursuit of development, innovation, and knowledge exchange. These scholarships are a symbol of our belief in the potential of Kenyan youth to shape the future,” she said.
Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, expressed gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for its continued support of the university’s academic mission. She noted that the scholarship program not only empowers individual students but also reinforces the university’s global partnerships. “This is a testament to the strong academic and diplomatic ties between Kenya and China. Our students are the greatest beneficiaries of this enduring friendship,” she said.
The Chinese Ambassador’s scholarship programme was started in 2013 to support needy students. The Chinese Embassy has been supporting the education institutions in Kenya in a bid to help young Kenyans pursue their dreams at the University of Nairobi. Over 100 Students from the University of Nairobi have benefited from this programme since 2013. The Scholarship targets only undergraduate students under the Government Sponsored (Module 1) category.
The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship continues to serve as a pillar of educational diplomacy, having benefited hundreds of University of Nairobi students over the years. The 2025 awardees now join a growing network of young scholars committed to academic success.
