As a way of enhancing student support services, the University of Nairobi's Office of the Dean of Students spearheaded a comprehensive training program for Peer Counselors. From April 22 to April 26, 2024, the university organized training sessions across all faculties, equipping 500 peer counselors with essential skills and knowledge.
The training covered a wide array of topics essential for effective peer counseling, including an overview of counseling, the distinction between guidance and counseling, the counseling process, and the role of peer counselors. Moreover, participants delved into exploring the qualities required to be an effective peer counselor, emphasizing empathy, active listening, and confidentiality.
On May 4, 2024, the 500 trained peer counselors were officially commissioned, marking the beginning of their role in supporting their fellow students. Armed with newfound knowledge and skills, peer counselors are poised to serve as valuable resources within the university community.
This initiative reflects the University of Nairobi's commitment to fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for its students. By investing in peer counseling programs, the university aims to provide students with accessible and confidential avenues for seeking guidance and support, thereby promoting holistic wellbeing.
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance student life, the University of Nairobi continues to explore innovative approaches to address the diverse needs of its student body. Through initiatives like the Peer Counselors training program, the university endeavors to empower students to navigate challenges effectively and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
