University Choir History

PDF version

The University of Nairobi students’ choir has come a long way. It was the brainchild of Dr. Arthur Mudogo Kemoli in 1967 when he was an undergraduate student. When he later left for further studies, the choir’s activities stopped. Kemoli, a prolific composer and arranger of African music, revived the choir in 1988 when he returned to the University of Nairobi as a lecturer in the department of Literature. Since then, the choir has continued to grow in stature and influence within and outside the university fraternity. It first gained fame because of the Christmas carols it performed in Taifa Hall and its performances at the graduation ceremonies. To this day, the choir remains a prominent feature in the university’s graduation ceremonies.
